10 Things not to do as a Freelancer

Here we are again, and once again I want to share with you a great guide to some common mistakes made by freelancers:

“When I first started freelancing as a college student, I was eager to do any website and would say “Yes” to anything, regardless of my skill set or the time involved. It was just nice to know that someone needed me for a skilled task. Unfortunately, I quickly found myself working all the time, eating Ramen noodles, and not getting anywhere in terms of paying off my wonderful college debt. To make things worse, these people were also giving my contact info out to other such people (you know, the lady who has been thinking about selling dog sweaters online and has a $100 budget for an e-commerce site, 1000 brochures, and a guaranteed #1 Google search result for the words “dog”, “sweater”, and “love”).Anyways, now four years later, my world (AND financial success) now requires ample use of the answer “No.” And here are ten questions I nearly always answer “No” to:”

Flock. The web browser version 2.0.

Good morning internet.

Today I discovered an alternative web browser called Flock.

Flock is a browser based on the open source Mozilla code that integrates social networking, photo uploading, bookmarks, and other features.

As a bit of a Facebook, Youtube and RSS news feed junkie it is possible that flock could be just the thing I am looking for.

So far flock seems to have tight integration with services like almost all web services and even this blog (I write this post with Flock’s built in blog posting doodad).

Check it out now and let me know what you think in the comments.

I will report back after a few days trial and let you know what I think of Flock.

Epic 1337 Eyechart

This is Totally Epic in my opinion. If I was having an eye test and this was pulled out I don’t think I would be able to keep a straight face.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1, iPhone killer? or Microsoft vs. Google?

Check this out, the XPERIA X1 QWERTY from Sony Ericsson. SE’s new XPERIA brand will focus on multimedia and mobile web communication. The X1 then, brings a 3-inch wide VGA (800 x 480) touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera (with photo light), A2DP Bluetooth, aGPS, WiFi, and quad-band GSM/EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA…

What I really like want to talk about is how this phone is more a case of Microsoft trying to keep Google at bay than SonyEricsson taking on Apple.

1. Apple iPhone released. Touch screens become all the rage.

2. Microsoft, who traditionally used carrier branded devices for WinMo starts pushing partnerships with mainstream phone companies like Samsung, Motorola, LG and now SonyEricsson.

A quick look at these landscape changing events from the past 12 months might make you think that Microsoft is desperate to get into bed with these phone manufactures is direct response to Apple’s market share guzzler.

The real mover for the mobile phone industry in 2007 in my opinion was in fact the Android platform announced by Google. The rumored ‘gphone’ turned out to in fact be a platform/operating system that could be used by manufacturers on a range of handsets. Google also announced some key partnerships with phone makers to put Android on their handsets.

Android is a bigger threat to Windows Mobile and Microsoft than the iPhone. The iPhone is a single product, even though its a great one, its still a single product. Win Mo on the other hand is directly comparable and threatened by Android because is an operating system/platform that is used on a variety of devices NOT manufactured by the maker of the operating system itself.

In the past, we have thought of Win Mo devices as just, a Windows Mobile Device, a PDA with a built in phone if you will. In the present/future Microsoft needs to take us is to a place where we call the device a SonyEricsson phone or a Samsung phone and one of the features is that it runs Win Mo 6 Pro.

Microsoft is battening down the hatches so to speak, preparing for the coming Android storm.

Who would have guessed, the new battleground between the giants Microsoft and Google is going to be in your back pocket.
