Check this out, the XPERIA X1 QWERTY from Sony Ericsson. SE’s new XPERIA brand will focus on multimedia and mobile web communication. What I really like want to talk about is how this phone is more a case of Microsoft trying to keep Google at bay than SonyEricsson taking on Apple.
1. Apple iPhone released. Touch screens become all the rage.
2. Microsoft, who traditionally used carrier branded devices for WinMo starts pushing partnerships with mainstream phone companies like Samsung, Motorola, LG and now SonyEricsson.
A quick look at these landscape changing events from the past 12 months might make you think that Microsoft is desperate to get into bed with these phone manufactures is direct response to Apple’s market share guzzler.
The real mover for the mobile phone industry in 2007 in my opinion was in fact the Android platform announced by Google. The rumored ‘gphone’ turned out to in fact be a platform/operating system that could be used by manufacturers on a range of handsets. Google also announced some key partnerships with phone makers to put Android on their handsets.
Android is a bigger threat to Windows Mobile and Microsoft than the iPhone. The iPhone is a single product, even though its a great one, its still a single product. Win Mo on the other hand is directly comparable and threatened by Android because is an operating system/platform that is used on a variety of devices NOT manufactured by the maker of the operating system itself.
In the past, we have thought of Win Mo devices as just, a Windows Mobile Device, a PDA with a built in phone if you will. In the present/future Microsoft needs to take us is to a place where we call the device a SonyEricsson phone or a Samsung phone and one of the features is that it runs Win Mo 6 Pro.
Microsoft is battening down the hatches so to speak, preparing for the coming Android storm.
Who would have guessed, the new battleground between the giants Microsoft and Google is going to be in your back pocket.
